In recent years Dartmouth has become something of a foodie destination – thanks in no small part of John Burton Race’s New Angel (itself a benefactor of Burton Race’s not insignificant appearances on UK television). And yet Dartmouth's reputation as a place to eat has been developing quietly over the years thanks to a number of good local restaurants and some fantastic local produce, particularly meat and fish.

The latter form the centrepiece to the tapas menu at Browns, a gorgeously understated boutique hotel a little away from the quay – and miles away from any anachronistic notions urbanites may have about Devon accommodation. The restaurant here is a chic affair – locals and visitors alike often find it by accident on finding the New Angel fully booked, only to mark it as their first port of call next time round.

As founder of the Dartmouth's Food Festival, it’s no real surprise to find chef proprietor James Brown (no, not that James Brown) a firm advocate of local produce (and let’s not be modest, a pretty damn fine chef). Choose from a two-tier menu (small plates, large plates); the former might include manchego and membrillo or smoked tapenade croutons while the latter includes an unmissable dish of razor clams in Manzanilla Sherry or grilled chorizo and baby squid.

Five Sherry types are available by the glass including Fino, Manzanilla, Oloroso, Cream and PX. Opening hours are limited so plan in advance.
