Now in its tenth year, Moro has done more to popularise Moorish cuisine in the UK than almost anyone else – indeed it’s arguable that before Sam and Sam Clark established their award-winning restaurant in London’s Exmouth Market, very few people in Britain even knew there was such a thing as Moorish cuisine.

With books and TV appearances behind them, it's sometimes easy to forget that the two Sam's reputation is founded on an eatery that has reimagined an ethnic cuisine and transformed UK dining in the process.

The long zinc bar, polished wood floors and open view to the kitchen recall the lively neighbourhood restaurants that inspired the Clarks to embark on their Moorish odyssey. In the summer, outdoor tables occasionally allow a glimpse of the Mediterranean atmosphere that underpins the tapas tradition while in the kitchen, the charcoal grill and wood-burning oven allow you to taste it.

Take the "posher" restaurant menu and you might start with Jamon Iberico with pan con tomate followed by roasted sea bass with wilted escarole (and then a dessert of Malaga raisin ice cream with PX); the tapas menu, is a drinkers menu in the truest sense – tiny dishes to accompany your beverage of choice: octopus salad, for example, or a selection of cold meats.

With a choice of 11 eleven ‘standard’ Sherries by the glass (or bottle) and six “extra-special” selections including a cheeky Hidalgo Oloroso Viejo at £13 a glass, this is probably the best selection of Sherry with food in Britain. Any lover of Spanish food should go at least once.
