Since opening in 2006 the buzz about Pinxto People has extended far beyond its Brighton home – it’s not uncommon for Londoners to pay a special visit to the seaside just to take in the food, drink and atmosphere at this quintessentially Brightonian (and yet undeniably Catalan) restaurant, bar and deli on the city’s main drag.

Armfuls of plaudits, awards and – of course – diners in their droves haven’t gone to their heads – unless you count a welcome expansion with a second restaurant in London’s Old St (Pinchito – just opened at time of writing). The original though is going to take a lot of beating.

Upstairs is the restaurant proper – choose from dishes such as roast pork belly with black olives and peaches, a mind-blowing grilled foie gras with mango French toast and coffee syrup or duck magret with raspberry porridge and fresh red chard, for example, designed to share in the Catalan style.

Downstairs you can experience the eponymous Pinxtos – bite-sized tapas snacks on a slice of bread or skewer designed to be enjoyed with a drink: classics like Russian salad, tortilla and marinated anchovies abound and its hard to pass up the churros con chocolate to finish.

The Sherry list here is nothing short of miraculous - 9 by the glass, supplemented with a cheeky Tio Pepe only available as a 200ml bottle – bone-dry, nutty and at only £6.50, the perfect entry point to a small plate extravaganza.
